Obituary of George C. Dettmer

 

George C. Dettmer, 95, of Hamilton Township, passed away January 18, 2018 at home. Born and raised in South River, he lived more than 40 years in the City of New Brunswick prior to moving to Hamilton Township, Mercer County in 2004.  He was a South River High School Graduate and attended the Rutgers University College of Agriculture and Experiment Station to take courses to become a Horticulturalist.

 

George was a veteran of World War II, having served with the Army/Air Force 450th Bomb Group, in Italy.  He retired from the New Jersey State Department of Transportation after serving the citizens of New Jersey for 35 years.  He was a parishioner of Saint Peter’s Roman Catholic Church in New Brunswick for over 40 years. He was an officer of the Mount Saint Mary Academy Fathers Club from 1969-1973.  He was an avid gardener.

 

Loving Husband, Father and Grandfather, George is survived by his wife, the former Marie DiGiovanni; one child, Maryanne D. (Grumelli) Evanko and her husband Kenneth M. Evanko of Robbinsville; grandson, Paul Michael-Vincent Grumelli of Hamilton; many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, including Dianne Maughan of Florida, Jean Finch of Texas, Gail Gould of Maine, Mark Di Giovanni of New Brunswick and William Brennan of Mount Holly, New Jersey. He was predeceased by his brother, Alton Ralph Dettmer of Safety Harbor, Florida and sister Evelyn Dettmer of San Antonio, Texas.

 

Relatives and friends are invited to visit on Tuesday, January 23, 2018 from 5-7PM at Boylan Funeral Home, 188 Easton Avenue, New Brunswick, and Wednesday, 9AM at the funeral home with a 10AM Mass of Christian Burial at St. Peter the Apostle Church, New Brunswick. Interment will follow at Resurrection Cemetery, Piscataway. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to: ‘ The George and Marie Dettmer Scholarship Fund’  at Mount Saint Mary Academy in Watchung, NJ. at Mount Saint Mary Academy, 1645 Rt. 22 at Terrill Road, Watchung, NJ  07069 Attn: Kathleen Staudt.
