Obituary of Dewain Downes

Dewain S. Downes, 90, died at home on Friday, May 2, 2015. Born in Milford, DE, Dewain was raised in Harrington, DE. He moved to Jersey City, NJ, where he lived for a number of years before moving to Somerset where he was a longtime resident. Dewain proudly served his country during World War II, with the United States Army, taking part in the D-Day invasion of Normandy at Utah Beach. Dewain had worked for many years with the Jersey Central Railroad of NJ and Conrail prior to his retirement. He was a member in good standing of the Brotherhood of Masons Raritan Valley Lodge # 46 as well as the Tall Cedars of Lebanon So-Ra-Bo Lodge # 48. Dewain will be missed by his family, many close friends and his beloved cats. He was predeceased by his loving wife, Edith H. Downes; his son, George D. Downes; his sisters, Dorothy Wyatt, Helen Muth and Elizabeth May Hill, as well as 1 great-grandchild. Surviving him are his daughters, Diane Susan Dinnegan of Howell, Meredith V. Downes of Somerville; his son Dewain R. Downes of Somerset; his brother, Rev. George A. Downes; 6 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. A funeral service will take place at 12:30 p.m. on Friday, May 8, at the Brigadier General William C. Doyle Veterans Cemetery in Arneytown, NJ, with interment to follow. Family and friends may pay their respects at the Boylan Funeral Home, 188 Easton Avenue in New Brunswick on Thursday, May 7, from 2:00 to 4:00 and 7:00 to 9:00 p.m.
