Obituary of Anthony J. "Tony" Calamoneri

Anthony John Calamoneri, son the late John and Mary Calamoneri, passed away on May 7, 2022. He was 89 years old. Anthony was born on May 5, 1933, in New Brunswick, New Jersey. He was raised in Edison, New Jersey, where he lived most of his life. As a boy, Anthony developed a lifelong love of sports. He attended local schools and went to St. Peter's High School. At St. Peter's, Anthony lettered in three varsity sports – football, basketball and baseball. He captained the basketball team and was named to a number of all county and all state parochial teams. In his senior year, he received a trophy for being St. Peter’s best all-around athlete. Shorty, after graduating high school in 1952, Anthony was drafted and served his country for two years during the Korean War. Anthony was honorably discharged from the army in 1954 and returned home to Edison. Soon thereafter Anthony married his high school sweet heart, the late Catherine Carol Boylan. The new couple happily resided in Edison and raised two children, Kevin and Tricia. In 1961, Anthony followed the path of his father and joined the Edison Police Department. Starting as a patrolman, Anthony rose swiftly through the ranks. He was eventually promoted to the rank of Detective and received special training in fingerprint analysis and crime scene photography. A tested member of the New Jersey State Identification Association, Anthony became a recognized expert in latent fingerprint analysis and provided expert testimony in the courts of New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania. During his thirty year career with the Edison Police Department, Anthony was promoted to Lieutenant and later to Captain. For 16 years Anthony commanded Central Records and Communications as well as Budgeting and Purchasing. Anthony also served as a Road and Station Commander. Toward the end of his police career, he was named Deputy Chief of Operations and later became the Acting Chief of Police. While serving as Acting Police Chief, the Edison Police Department confronted a serious hostage situation. Anthony directed the police department’s response. Anthony took great pride in the performance of his officers in resolving the situation and he subsequently received a citation for his leadership during the crisis from Edison Mayor Sam Convery and Peter J. Barnes, the Director of Public Safety – both whom Anthony held in high regard. Anthony retired from the Edison Police Department in 1991 as Acting Chief of Police. As a former dues paying member of Edison PBA Local #75, at the time of his retirement he was given a gold life membership card from the rank and file which meant a great deal to him. He is also a retired member of PBA local 600. In 2001, Anthony and his wife Carol moved to Rossmoor, a retirement community in Monroe Township, where they spent some of the happiest years of their lives. Anthony was an avid golfer and loved playing with his golfing buddies on Rossmoor’s beautiful course. Anthony and Carol were very active in Rossmoor’s community. On June 18, 2008, Carol passed away after lengthy illness. After 52 years of marriage, Carol’s passing left a tremendous void in Anthony’s life. Eventually, he met Marie Bills who became his partner and life companion. Anthony and Marie spent many happy times together and she brought great joy to him. Above all, Anthony enjoyed life. He loved his golf, good food, good times with family and friends, Notre Dame Football and Yankee baseball. He will be sorely missed by all who knew him but fondly remembered as great father, grandfather and friend. Anthony is survived by his son, Kevin Calamoneri and his wife Maria of Huntingtown, Maryland; his daughter, Tricia and her husband Daniel McGarrey of Old Bridge. He leaves behind five grandchildren, Anthony, Jack, Caroline Calamoneri and Casey and Kaitlyn McGarrey. He is further survived by his brother in law, Bruce Boylan of Hoboken, New Jersey.
