Obituary of G. Robert Campbell

G. Robert Campbell, Chief Ret., 75, of Roanoke, VA, and formerly of Edison, NJ, passed away on Thursday, February 15, 2024. He was born on April 14, 1948, in Newark, NJ, the son of George Abraham Campbell and Kathleen Coogan Campbell. Chief Campbell was appointed to the Edison (New Jersey) Division of Fire as a Firefighter in 1971. He rose through the ranks and was appointed Chief of the Department in January of 1999. He retired in 2006, and then served as an Instructor at the Middlesex County Fire Academy in Sayreville, NJ (2006 – 2007). Chief Campbell was a member of the first graduating class of Edison’s J.P. Stevens High School in 1965. He attended Union Junior College before completing his B.A. in Political Science at Clemson University in 1970. In 1979 he completed the semester-long Harvard Trade Union Program at the Harvard School of Business, representing the IAFF. He earned his M.A. in Labor Studies from Rutgers University in 1983. He was active in the Oconee County (SC) chapter of Habitat for Humanity, serving on the Family Selection Committee and volunteering in the resale store. He was a liaison for the chief of the Clemson University Fire Department. He took up blacksmithing as a hobby, and served as a volunteer blacksmith at the Hagood Village Historic Village in Pickens County, SC. Surviving to cherish his memory is his wife of 52 years, Donna Jean Campbell; daughter, Erin Virginia Leftwich (Wayne); granddaughters, Alice Leftwich and Clara Leftwich, of Roanoke, VA; sister, Patricia Campbell McAvoy; nephews, Jonathan McAvoy and Brendan McAvoy, of Pt. Pleasant Beach, NJ; sister-in-law, Claudia Beaty (David); nephew, Kevin (Casey) Beaty; and niece, Sally Beaty Wallace, of Douglasville, GA. The family will receive family and friends from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Friday, February 23, 2024, at Boylan Funeral Home, 10 Wooding Avenue, Edison. The Graveside Service with Honors will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 24, 2024, at Graceland Memorial Park in Kenilworth. The family will be at The Raritan River Boat Club, Player Avenue, Edison after the service. All are invited to join the family there for a celebration of Robert’s life. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations to the Salvation Army in his honor.
