Obituary of Edward J. Raser

Edward J. Raser, 95, of Monroe Township, NJ, passed away on Friday, January 8, 2021 at St. Peter's University Hospital, New Brunswick from non-COVID pneumonia. Born and raised in the Trenton, NJ area, he was sent by the U.S. Navy V-12 program to Cornell University where he graduated in 1946 with a Bachelors in Electrical Engineering. He later earned a Masters in Math and Science Education from Columbia University in 1950 and taught high school briefly. In 1952 he joined IBM as an electronics engineer and was involved in early computer development and military defense systems until he retired in 1986. During his time in the Navy, a fellow sailor’s interest in genealogy ignited in Ed a lifelong passion which culminated in his publishing several books on family history and the graveyards of New Jersey, the last at age 92. In addition to genealogy, Ed loved to travel and had especially enjoyed trips to Germany, the Soviet Union, Japan and Australia. His later travels were with his companion Margaret, and both were avid dancers as well, having met on a dance floor in 1988. Ed enjoyed an active life at the Rossmoor community from 2004 until his death. Ed leaves behind his sister, Lorraine deHahn; daughter, Leslie (Bogdan); son, Jonathan (Marie); sisters-in-law, Natalie (Gerry) and Lydia (Shawn); and grandchildren, Colin, Daniel and Stephanie. He was predeceased by his ex-wife Maria and his longtime companion Margaret Copeland. A gregarious person and always sincere, generous, thoughtful and positive, Ed will be sorely missed! A memorial celebration of his life will take place in New Jersey at a later date.
