Elizabeth Davis

Obituary of Elizabeth Davis

Elizabeth "Betsy" Brooks Davis, known for her compassion and generous spirit, died unexpectedly in her sleep at her home in Somerset, New Jersey on December 30, 2013. Betsy was born on May 25, 1953 in Bonham, Texas and grew up in Leonard, Texas. She graduated with honors from Southern Methodist University. Later, she received a Masters in Government from Georgetown University, a Senior Professional in Human Resources certification, and a certification in Strategic Planning from Wharton. She was a Human Resources professional for over 30 years, first in the Washington, DC area and most recently in New Jersey. Since 2007, she was a Staff Executive at IEEE, where she was an advocate for the organization's employees and proud of her part in making it one of the top places to work in New Jersey. Betsy also wrote a job search book, Market Yourself!, and volunteered with the American Society of Association Executives by writing and speaking on HR topics. A consummate people person, it came as no surprise that she was a high school cheerleader and the president of her college sorority. Equally opinionated as she was a good listener, she lived by her principles and inspired others to do the same. She was known for her infectious laugh, singing voice, storytelling, and sage advice. She was a role model for overcoming obstacles and living life to the fullest. She rebounded from a health scare in 2012 by re-learning how to walk, graduating from a leadership development program, instituting a wellness campaign, planning a job rotation program, joining Toastmasters, and writing a book on questions she wished she had asked her mother. Betsy loved cooking, singing, spicy food, good books, playing the piano, early mornings, bright lipstick, and showering her nieces and nephew with presents. She was deeply loved by her family and friends: her parents, Dr. James Walter Davis (deceased) and Ruth Borland Davis; her brother Col. James Walter Davis, Jr and his wife Susan Davis; her brother Joseph Redmon Davis and his wife Rondi Hillstrom Davis (Betsy's college roommate); her brother William Borland Davis (deceased); her niece Meredith Davis Mulhern and her husband Thomas Mulhern; her nieces Genevieve Elizabeth Davis and Alice Brooks Davis; her great-niece and nephew, Evelyn Davis Mulhern and Thomas Patrick Mulhern, Jr, respectively; her friends and co-workers at IEEE; her friend and faithful driver Fayyez Uddin; her Washington, DC book club friends; and her Bible study group. A service to celebrate Betsy's life will be held at 5:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 7 at Christ United Methodist Church of Piscataway, 485 Hoes Lane, Piscataway, NJ 08854. A memorial service will be held in Leonard, Texas at a later date. Should friends desire, memorial contributions may be made to the IEEE Foundation - Humanitarian Technology Fund.
