Ralph Pugliese

Obituary of Ralph Victor Pugliese

Ralph V. Pugliese, 95, passed from this life on the night of July 19, 2020. Born in the Bedford-Stuyvesant section of Brooklyn, New York, Ralph was the eldest of three sons, followed by Salvatore (deceased), and Victor, born to Beniamino and Adalgisa nee DeRosas, both having emigrated from Italy. He attended Boy’s High School followed by St. John’s University, becoming teacher with the New York City Public School system. In July, 1958 he married his first wife Camilla nee Attanasio, started a family and moved to Marine Park, where he began teaching at P.S. 207, a position he held until his retirement thirty-three years later. Ralph was an active member in his beloved community. In addition to his regular teaching job he would work the after-school center, the night center and day camp in the early summers, all in support of students. He belonged to St. Columba R.C. Church, as a parishioner, an usher, and a member of the Parish Council and he enjoyed bowling with the church league on Monday nights. He earned his Fourth Degree in the Knights of Columbus, and was a member of the Lions Club. He attended meetings of Community Board 18 and the Flatbush Ambulance Corp. He was involved with the Catholic Teachers Association and an active member of the Marine Park Civic Association. He was later elected as its President, serving for eleven years. Each August, he took some time with the family to vacation in Seaside Park, New Jersey and spent the winter months in West Palm Beach, Florida. After retirement he would travel with Mom around the country and the globe, making many friends along the way. With his boisterous personality, talent for telling jokes, mixing cocktails, and his love of dancing, he was often the life of any party. A creative person, he could play piano, paint, sculpt, and enjoyed working with wood and tile. He was also an excellent cook and an aficionado of classical music and opera. After the passing of his wife Camilla, he got married, at age 79, to his high school sweetheart, Concetta Parlante. He was a larger than life personality, committed to his family, his church, his community and to the enjoyment of life. Appreciated and loved by family, friends, his peers, and the countless students he educated and inspired, the world will seem less bubbly and bright without him. He will be missed. He is survived by his second wife Concetta, daughter Victoria Pugliese, daughter Maryanne Alfano and her husband Anthony Alfano, son Thomas D. Pugliese and his longtime girlfriend Flordeliz Herrera, Thomas’ step-son Brent M. Serin and his wife Sarah nee Ren, brother Victor and sister-in-law Joyce nee Costantini, many loving nieces and nephews, and by a very special person, Claudette Hall, who provided such loving, excellent care for the past 6 years and became one of our family in all our hearts. The viewing will be held Friday, July 24, from 4pm to 7pm at Boylan Funeral Home, 10 Wooding Ave., in Edison, NJ 08817. The funeral mass will be offered on Saturday, July 25 at 9:30am at St. Matthew the Apostle Roman Catholic Church located at 81 Seymour Ave Edison, NJ.
