Obituary of Catherine O'Leary Gately

Catherine O'Leary Gately passed away Friday, August 30th at McCarrick Care Center Somerset, NJ. She and her twin sister, Elizabeth were born October 31, 1926 in New Brunswick, NJ to James and Elizabeth Farley O'Leary. After the death of their father in 1930 the family lived with their grandmother, Elizabeth Hughes Farley, in New Brunswick on Livingston Avenue. Catherine graduated from New Brunswick High School and The Middlesex General Hospital School of Nursing. She worked mostly as a private duty nurse to several prominent New Brunswick families. The family spent many summer vacations at the Jersey shore especially in Avon-By-The-Sea. It was there that Catherine met and married Edward Gately, owner of The Stratford Inn. Together they operated the hotel until Ed's death in 1966. Catherine continued alone, but time had taken its toll on many of the stately edifices in the area. The Strat was demolished and the land sold in the early seventies. Catherine was predeceased by her mother and father, her twin sister Elizabeth Buckelew and her brothers James and Robert O'Leary. Surviving are her nephews Robert B., James, John, Robert F., Michael and Thomas O'Leary, Joseph and Robert Buckelew, her nieces Elizabeth Brotherton, Elizabeth Desmond, Catherine Mobilian and Elizabeth Reeves, many grand nieces and nephews, two great grand nieces and her sister-in-law Mary Ann O'Leary. Funeral services will be held at the Boylan Funeral Home, 188 Easton Avenue in New Brunswick. There will be a viewing on Friday, September 13th from 7:00-9:00PM. Services will take place at the funeral home on Saturday, September 14th at 9:00AM. The Memorial Mass will follow at Sacred Heart Church on Throop Avenue in New Brunswick at 10:00AM. parking is available behind the church. Interment will follow at St. Peter's Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be sent the The McCarrick Care Center, 13 Dellwood Lane, Somerset, NJ 08873.
