Gladys Cohen

Obituary of Gladys F. Cohen

Gladys Ellen Feldman Cohen passed away peacefully with her loving family by her side on February 7, 2023. She was born on June 16, 1934 to Anna (Willner) and Herman Feldman in Beth Israel Hospital in Newark, New Jersey. She grew up in Newark, and graduated from Weequahic High School. At 16, she met the love of her life, Alfred Irwin (Mitch) Cohen from Port Chester, New York. They were married on February 1, 1953 at the Clinton Manor in Newark, New Jersey. They would go on to raise two daughters, Amy and Jody. Gladys and Mitch settled in Norwalk, Connecticut for over thirty years; and Mitch, along with his brother Lenny, would go onto own the “Midget Market” in South Norwalk, Connecticut. Gladys would pursue a career as a nail technician throughout her years in Westport, Connecticut. Vacationing in the Catskills with family was a wonderful experience for them but in the very later years, Gladys and Mitch would vacation with their daughters at the Jersey Shore and Maryland beaches. They were lifelong members at Temple Shalom in East Norwalk and fulfilled their life with Judaism. They left Connecticut after a serious accident which left Mitch a paraplegic, therefore forcing them to move to Maryland where he could continue to support his family. After many years and wanting to be closer to family, they moved back to New Jersey in 1988 to an Adult Community, Greenbriar at Whittingham in Monroe Township. They developed many lifelong friendships in their community and loved the active adult community lifestyle. Gladys was an avid Mahjongg player, and worked for the Chabad community as a telemarketer throughout the years. Gladys was predeceased in death by her husband, Mitch; her daughter, Amy Cohen Calfee; her beloved sister, Beverly; and brother, Edgar. Gladys is survived by her loving daughter, Jody DiGiovanni (Mark) of New Brunswick, New Jersey, (previously of West Windsor Township); her brother, Harvey Feldman, 99 of Springfield, New Jersey; grandsons, Scott (Christine) Fleming of Frederick, Maryland, Jason Daly of Charleston, South Carolina, and Joshua (Katherine) Daly of Cockeysville, Maryland; great grandchildren, Harper, Knox and Hannah; and many nieces and nephews. Services will be held at Boylan Funeral Home, 10 Wooding Avenue, Edison, New Jersey on Thursday, February 9th, 2023 at 10:30 a.m. and will sit Shiva on Thursday, 6:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m., and Friday, February 10th from 12:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. at the home of her daughter, Jody and son-in-law Mark (DiGiovanni) at 14 Taylor Drive, New Brunswick, New Jersey 08901.
