Obituary of Mary Margaret Shirley

Mary Margaret (Marge) Shirley, 93, of Edison passed away on Wednesday, August 17th at home. Born in Allentown, PA, to the late John and Josephine Herega, she resided in Carteret before moving to Edison over sixty-five years ago. Marge was a graduate of Carteret High School and St. Michael's School of Nursing. She was an RN at Perth Amboy General Hospital for many years as an Operating Room Nurse. Then, as a well respected leader in her field, she was asked to help launch the Middlesex County Mental Health Program, where she worked as a psychiatric nurse until she retired. Marge was an avid bowler, where she was secretary of her league for many years. She loved baking and cake decorating, as well as knitting, crocheting, and sewing, but her greatest pride was her family. She was loved by many and will be greatly missed. She was an active member of St. Paul the Apostle Church in Highland Park for over sixty years, where she was involved in many parish ministries. Marge was predeceased by her sister, Johanna O'Hara; and her husband of 65 years, Frank Shirley. She is survived by her brother, John Herega of FL; and her children, David of Tinton Falls, Diane Kohlbecker and her husband Albert of Edison, Joseph and his wife Theresa of Mt. Holly, NC, Arleen Burns and her husband Jeff of John's Creek, GA, and Allen of Edison; along with 11 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. Relatives and friends are invited to visit on Monday, August 22nd from 4-8pm at Boylan Funeral Home, 10 Wooding Avenue in Edison. A final viewing will be held on Tuesday, August 23rd at 9:30am at Boylan, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Paul the Apostle Church in Highland Park at 10:30am.
