Obituary of James Joseph Dowgin

James Joseph Dowgin, 89, passed away on Wednesday, January 26, 2022 at Princeton Hospital. Jim was born July 6, 1932 in Dayton, NJ. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Shirley Ryan Dowgin. Jim was the son of James and Gertrude Dowgin and was predeceased by his sister, Mary Dowgin Boylan; brother, Ambrose Dowgin; and his daughter, Patti Dowgin. Jim is also survived by his children, Michael V. Dowgin (Cathy), Dr. Thomas A. Dowgin (Joan), James M. Dowgin (Maria), Joan Dowgin Hilovsky (Larry) and Ann Dowgin Reilly (George). He was also the proud “Pop” to 17 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. Jim was an avid antique car restorer and collector and was often seen driving a Model T touring car into Dayton to go to the post office. He and his wife Shirley traveled often in their motorhome to car shows and to visit their children. Jim worked as a plumber and pipe fitter for over 40 years and belonged to UA Local 9. Jim, or “Pop”, was beloved by his family and was the first one called if anything mechanical broke. He could diagnose a car’s problem over the phone and has erased many fender benders caused by his grandchildren to keep them out of trouble. He brought decrepit Model T cars back to life for much of his adult life and enjoyed driving them and tinkering with them. He also enjoyed gardening and sharing the bounty. Funeral services will be privately held for the family. In lieu of flowers, please make a memorial donation to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Jim and Shirley always felt that their lives were very blessed and felt strongly about helping children in need.
