Obituary of George W. Popel

George W. Popel, 77, of Somerset, passed away on Sunday, August 29, 2021 at University Medical Center of Princeton іn Plainsboro, NJ. George was born in Ukraine, raised in Cleveland, OH and lived in South Brunswick for 30 years before moving to Somerset last year. He was a Mathematics Professor at Middlesex County College and Rutgers University. George was a longtime member of both KLK and PLAST Ukrainian Scouting Organization. In his free time, George was an avid tennis player and skier. George was predeceased by his parents, Yarema and Olena Popel. He is survived by his loving wife of 46 years, Vira (Slobodian) Popel; his children, Taras Popel and his wife Larissa, Andrea Popel, Melanie Pyrih and her husband Adrian; grandchildren Michael Popel and Deanna Pyrih; sister, Marta Halarewycz and family; brother Andrew Popel and family, He is also survived by Lesia Schinnerer, who was like a daughter to him and Vira, along with her husband Dan and family. Funeral services will be held on Friday, September 3, 2021 at St. John the Baptist Ukrainian Catholic Church, 60 North Jefferson Rd., Whippany, NJ. Relatives and friends are invited to pay their respects on Friday between 8:30AM and 10:30 AM; Liturgy will begin at 10:30 AM. Interment at St. Andrew’s Cemetery, South Bound Brook will take place at a date to be announced. The family kindly requests that masks be worn inside the church. Donations in George’s memory may be made to a charity of one’s choice or Plast Camp-Vovcha Tropa.
