Obituary of Wasyl Chomut

Wasyl Chomut, 95, passed away on Saturday, February 17, 2018 at his longtime residence in Piscataway, NJ. Born in the village of Perevoloka in Western Ukraine, Wasyl was the second oldest of eight children. Forced to flee his home during WWII, he endured several years as a displaced person in a German labor camp, where he married his wife of 68 years, Olia Chomut (née Supranovych).  Mr. Chomut emigrated to the United States in 1949 with his wife and young daughter, where they settled and lived in Carteret, NJ for 10 years before moving to their home in Piscataway.

Mr. Chomut was a self-made and hard-working man, having owned a construction and masonry business with his brother Michael, and later working as a hotel maintenance director. He was a master gardener and beekeeper, and a very active supporter and benefactor of Ukrainian cultural, political and community organizations. A true activist and patriot, he worked tirelessly to support a free and independent Ukraine.

He was predeceased by his beloved wife Olia in 2013; as well as his siblings Michael, Ivan, Peter, Joseph, Dmytro, Anna, and Evdokhia of Ukraine and the United States. Surviving are his daughter Bohdanna Hucul with her husband Jaroslaw of Somerset; his granddaughters Natalia Hucul Holowka with her husband Stefan of Montreal, QC; Oksana Hucul Czarny with her husband Zenon of Princeton, NJ; his two great-granddaughters Olena Holowka and Seraphina Czarny; as well as his nieces and nephews.

Mr. Chomut leaves behind a great legacy of strength, benevolence, love for God, family and country. He will be deeply missed.
