Obituary of Irene Corrigan

Irene Corrigan, 91, of Somerset, passed on to eternal life on Wednesday July 26, 2017, at St. Peter’s University Hospital in New Brunswick.

Irene lived a quiet life of great prayer, great sacrifice, great love and great joy! She embodied the words “self sacrifice”, always choosing to place the needs of others ahead of her own. She quietly performed a ministry of visiting the sick and giving freely of her time to the lonely and elderly. She never hesitated to speak out for those who are vulnerable and cannot speak for themselves, particularly those children not yet born. She always quickly forgave any hurts, living a life free of anger and resentment. Her deep love for the church moved her to many acts of servitude. The last years of her long life were spent in prayer, in imitation of the Blessed Mother and in deep devotion to Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. She allowed herself one passion besides her faith and service to others, and that was family. She found particular pleasure in the presence of her children and grandchildren and in her relationships with her sister and brother and their families. She truly loved her neighbors as herself, and her neighbors were everyone she encountered in life. For all generations of her family to come, her life will be a shining example of how to be happy in this world.

Irene was predeceased and greeted in eternal life by her husband John Corrigan, her parents Alexander and Julia Wanczyk and her grandson Wyatt Vernborg. She is survived by her siblings: Casimir Wanczyk of Chattanooga, TN and Jean and James Cruise of Huntington, NY; her children: Nancy and Walter Sasso of Honesdale,PA, John and Marlene Corrigan of Monroe, Catherine and Mark Vernborg of Butler Township, PA and Julianna and Douglas Watchorn of Frenchtown; her grandchildren: Christopher and Sean Corrigan, Alexa, John, Luke, David and Mary Kate Watchorn and Matthew and John Paul Vernborg; and many extended and much loved family, friends and caregivers.
