George Shefton

Obituary of George Shefton

George A. Shefton, 73, passed away at Parker at McCarrick on Sunday, April 23, 2017. He was born on April 24, 1943 on a farm in rural South Carolina to George and Minnie Lee Shefton. As a young man, George moved to New York City in order to seek new opportunities. This move introduced him to a career in butchery that lasted for nearly 40 years. During the 1970s, George moved to Highland Park, NJ where he lived the majority of his life. Growing up in the American South during the 1940s through the 1960s would have a lasting effect on George in two critical ways: the Civil Rights movement and music. To those he loved most, he tried to impress the importance of the Civil Rights era by recounting his participation in marches for equality and meetings that featured Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. It was of the utmost importance that his children and grandchildren knew the struggles of their grandfather's generation. Equally important to George was his love of music, any visitor was sure to hear stories of George seeing James Brown perform live at the Apollo, and a lucky guest might see his impression of the Godfather of Soul's signature dance moves. George is predeceased by his parents and two siblings. He is survived by eleven siblings, his son, Darrin, and daughters Tonya Clarke and her husband Casey, of Landstuhl, Germany and Nikki Butkiewicz and her husband Ron, of Plainfield, New Jersey. He is also survived by his two precious grandchildren Jaylen and Arianna of Landstuhl, Germany. Finally, he is survived by Theresa Shefton of New Brunswick, NJ, mother of Tonya and Darrin and Susan Short of Edison, NJ, mother of Nikki and his tireless caretaker for the final years of his life. Cremation will be private. Arrangements are entrusted to the care of Boylan Funeral Home, 10 Wooding Avenue, Edison, NJ.
